Approval and application context
The notes below help you assess the scope and conditions. The regulatory text and its exceptions govern your application.
I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?
Use the requirements of the 05 series for a new engine type, with the current 05 series · Supplement 2 text for your application. Approval and placing-on-the-market dates must be checked separately for the engine category and power.
- This applies to agricultural, forestry and non-road machinery engines in categories NRE, NRG, NRSh, NRS, SMB and ATS; it is not an emissions approval for road vehicles.
- The application tables show 29 December 2018 for type approval. For NRE engines from 56 kW to below 130 kW, the placing-on-the-market date is 1 January 2020; read the other rows for your own category.
- Paragraph 12.4 applies separately to exports, and paragraph 12.5 to replacing an engine in a vehicle already in service.
State the engine category, power, fuel and intended use in your application, and confirm the suitable approval route with the relevant country’s approval authority.
Which is the latest level? How long can I use it?
The latest level is 05 series · Supplement 2, in force from 26 September 2025. It adjusts the CO₂ test report fields and the hydrogen-engine table heading; it does not introduce a new common expiry date for all engines.
- This applies to agricultural, forestry and non-road machinery engines in categories NRE, NRG, NRSh, NRS, SMB and ATS; it is not an emissions approval for road vehicles.

- Paragraph 12.4 applies separately to exports, and paragraph 12.5 to replacing an engine in a vehicle already in service.
State the engine category, power, fuel and intended use in your application, and confirm the suitable approval route with the relevant country’s approval authority.
Do I need to update my existing approval? By when?
Supplement 2 does not automatically cancel all existing approvals. Check your engine category, power and intended use. An earlier-series approval may not be accepted for placing new engines on the market. Special conditions apply to exports and replacement engines.
