Approval and application context
The notes below help you assess the scope and conditions. The regulatory text and its exceptions govern your application.
I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?
You may apply under the 08 series · Supplement 3. Permission to grant an approval to an earlier series does not require other countries to accept it.
- R9 covers sound-emission approval of L2, L4 and L5 vehicles.
- The general duty to accept earlier-series approvals ended on 1 September 2024; approvals for vehicles or systems unaffected by the 08-series changes remain excepted.
Prepare your application to the 08 series · Supplement 3; confirm acceptance with your approval authority if using an earlier series.
What is the latest level, and how long can I use it?
The latest level is the 08 series · Supplement 3, in force from 11 January 2026. No general expiry date is set for this level.
- ISO 10844:2021 may be used for the test track.
- ISO 10844:2014 tracks remain acceptable until 11 January 2031; this is not an expiry date for all vehicle approvals.
State the track standard in your test plan and account for the transition period for the 2014 standard.
Do I need to update my existing approval, and by when?
Supplement 3 does not set a general deadline to update your entire existing approval. Check the test-track and earlier-series conditions separately.
- Extensions of earlier-series approvals continue; acceptance is subject to paragraph 11.
- For conformity of production, renew the manufacturer declaration; the applicable additional sound tests must not exceed Annex 6 limits by more than 1.0 dB(A).
Notify your approval authority if you change the vehicle or exhaust type so it can determine whether further testing or an extension is needed.
