Approval and application context

The notes below help you assess the scope and conditions. The regulatory text and its exceptions govern your application.

I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?

You can apply under the 00 series for R84 approval of fuel-consumption measurement. R84 sets no separate deadline for new applications.

  • This covers measurement of manufacturer-declared fuel consumption for internal-combustion vehicles in categories M1 and N1 having a maximum total mass below 2 tonnes. Confirm your vehicle and approval route with the approval authority.

Include the engine and vehicle descriptions, and provide a representative vehicle for testing.

What is the latest level, and until when can I use it?

The current level is the 00 series, in force since 15 July 1990. R84 gives no end date for using this level.

  • Fuel consumption is measured on a representative vehicle under the R84 test conditions.

Check that your measurement meets the 00-series requirements and the approval route required for your application.

Do I need to update my existing approval, and by when?

R84 sets no update date for moving to a newer level. A vehicle change affecting fuel consumption may require further testing, depending on the type of change.

  • Paragraph 7 explains which changes may require further tests. For certain minor changes, technical evidence accepted by the technical service may be used.

Send the technical service the effect of the change on fuel consumption and any comparative test results.
