I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?
From 21 March 2002, new headlamp types can no longer receive R72 approval. Replacement headlamps for vehicles in use may still be approved to the original or 01 series.
- These answers cover motorcycle headlamps with HS1 halogen lamps producing an asymmetrical passing beam and a driving beam.
- This is six months after R112 entered into force on 21 September 2001. Paragraph 16.4 preserves approvals for replacement headlamps.
Check the approval level and intended replacement use with your approval authority.
What is the latest level, and until when can I use it?
The latest level is the 01 series, in force since 12 September 2001. This date does not end all existing headlamp approvals. Paragraph 16.1 limits new approvals; paragraph 16.4 preserves the replacement-headlamp route.

Do I need to update my existing approval, and by when?
You may extend an approval to the original or 01 series. Approvals granted before R112 entered into force, and subsequent extensions of those approvals, remain valid indefinitely. Apply paragraphs 16.4 and 16.7 when supplying replacement headlamps for vehicles in use.
