I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?
First R1 approvals for headlamps for new vehicles have not been available since 21 March 2002. For replacement headlamps for vehicles in use, applications may use the 02 series or preceding series.
- The replacement headlamp must be intended for vehicles already in use. This exception does not reopen first approvals for headlamps for new vehicles.
Confirm with the approval authority that the application is for a replacement headlamp and agree the series to be used.
What is the latest level, and until when can I use it?
The current level is the 02 series, in force since 8 September 2001. First approvals for headlamps for new vehicles are closed; replacement headlamps and existing approvals follow separate conditions.
- R1 approvals granted before R112 entered into force, and subsequent extensions of those approvals, remain valid.
- The 02 series entered into force generally on 8 September 2001 and for South Africa and Yugoslavia on 8 November 2001.
Distinguish a new application from use of an existing approval, and apply the transition condition for your case.
Do I need to update my existing approval, and by when?
You do not have to replace an older approval solely because the 02 series entered into force. Under paragraph 14.3, approvals granted before R112 entered into force and their extensions remain valid indefinitely.
- Extensions of existing approved types remain available. Paragraphs 14.6 and 14.7 also preserve the conditions for fitting and using replacement headlamps.
If the headlamp type changes, send your approval and a description of the changes to the authority that granted it.
