Approval and application context

The notes below help you assess the scope and conditions. The regulatory text and its exceptions govern your application.

I am applying for approval for the first time. Which level can I use, and what is the deadline?

From 15 November 2021, new rear marking plate types can no longer receive R70 approval. Approvals remain available for replacement plates for vehicles in use.

  • This guidance covers rear marking plates for heavy and long vehicles only. It does not cover every requirement for vehicle type approval.
  • This is 24 months after R150 entered into force on 15 November 2019. Paragraph 13.3 preserves replacement-device approvals; paragraph 13.2 preserves extensions of existing approvals.

Check the approval level and intended replacement use with your approval authority.

What is the latest level, and until when can I use it?

The latest level is the 02 series, in force since 15 October 2019. It does not reopen approval for new vehicles. Replacement-device approvals for vehicles in use and extensions of existing approvals remain available under their specific conditions.

  • This guidance covers rear marking plates for heavy and long vehicles only. It does not cover every requirement for vehicle type approval.

Check the approval level and intended replacement use with your approval authority.

Do I need to update my existing approval, and by when?

You may extend an existing approval. Devices approved to earlier series may continue to be fitted or used as replacements on vehicles in use. These provisions do not permit new approvals for new vehicles.

  • This guidance covers rear marking plates for heavy and long vehicles only. It does not cover every requirement for vehicle type approval.

Check the approval level and intended replacement use with your approval authority.
